Funding for Leonora’s Independent Living Unit

Shire of Leonora receives $3.5 million as a commitment by the State Government to support the establishment of independent living units in Leonora

On Friday 28th August, 2020, the State Government announced $3.5 million funding towards the construction of an independent living village in Leonora.  This is a further expansion of aged care accommodation in regional Western Australia through the Regional Aged Accommodation Program.

The project will be built at a central location in town and will incorporate eight modern unites with individual private courtyards, and a community hall, gardens and barbecue facilities.

The Shire of Leonora will contribute a further $1 million to the project. The Shire President, Cr Peter Craig, said “that the project had been identified as a priority more than five years ago, and it will be incredibly satisfying for the Shire of Leonora Council to see the project taking such an important step towards becoming a reality. In addition, the construction of modern attractive units in Central Leonora will contribute to the overall look of the town.”

The announcement by the Hon Alannah MacTiernan MLC Minister for Regional Development; Agriculture and Food; Ports, was also welcomed by the Shire of Leonora’s long term Chief Executive Officer, Mr Jim Epis, who has been an integral part of the drive by the Shire for the establishment of such a facility. As a long term resident, he can see the benefit to the Leonora community for older residents to remain in their community where they are familiar and comfortable.

The progression of this project in such a difficult year is a credit to both State Government and the Shire of Leonora.
