Golden Gift Weekend

A small outback town, elite athletes, $50,000 up for grabs, a bitumen street as the track combine this with dirt track horse racing, fireworks, market stalls, bands and street entertainment all weekend for the kids and you have yourself an outback experience that is Leonora's Golden Gift Carnival on the 30th of May through to the 1st of June 2009.

Commence your unique desert experience in style and indulge yourself in the sport of kings at the dusty race track on the Saturday afternoon. Witness six exciting horse races interspersed with Fashions in the Field and exciting entertainment for both children and adults. Try your luck at Australia's traditional game – "Two Up" after the last race before returning to the main street for more fantastic street entertainment. Then sit back, relax and enjoy the spectacular fireworks display from smoodgers hill, followed by a Free Concert under the stars with a collection of Australia's greatest cover bands. 100% Abba, The Fab Four, Jumping Jack Flash and Roy Orbison will all be there to entertain the crowds with Dame Edna as performed by Andrew Simpson, hosting the evening.

"Up and at 'em" bright and early Sunday with a scrumptious community breakfast at the home of former U.S. president Herbert Hoover, spend some moments in the memories of yesteryear as you explore the sensational museum and the 'Ghost Houses' that form the authentic precinct of Gwalia.

With your appetite satisfied its back to Leonora to witness the Release of Hundreds of Pigeons as they commence their journey to Geraldton in this year’s race. Then let the main event enthrall you as you witness Australia's best, fresh from the World Championships, pound the street in pursuit of the glory and prestige of the titles of Golden Gift Winners 2008 and $30000 in prize money together with gold ingots. Athletics continue throughout the afternoon and conclude with presentations at 4.30 pm as you set yourself for an evening's live entertainment.

Finish your Sunday in one of the local watering holes as they provide live bands from 7.30 to 10.00pm.

Your outback weekend concludes on the Monday as you unwind at the horse races with another six farewell events and more live entertainment.
